PhaConsult

Corniche Bay, Mauritius

pha consult were appointed as the Sustainable MEP + Design Consultants for the development of 120 hillside villas, a hotel, marina and new golf course. This project represents a great challenge in the creation of a sustainable resort design and the Client’s objective is to set a precedent for future coastal resort developments.

Located in a mangrove habitat with a limited natural water resource and an extreme tropical climate, the design required a number of specific responses to minimise environmental impacts. Foster + Partners design is a sensitive and environmentally responsive approach to luxury resort living in Mauritius. The building forms are integrated within the lush landscape and local volcanic rock and timber shingles will be used in the construction.

The building forms and roof design will optimise shading, daylight and natural ventilation to minimise energy use and solar water heating will be provided to all units. Electric vehicles will be used for travel around the complex. Fundamental to the masterplan was the need to protect the coastal region from water pollution and to make best use of limited water resources. Rainwater will therefore be harvested from roofs and along with all grey and blackwater will be treated and used to irrigate the golf course. Water consumption is also reduced through efficient devices.
