Spaceport America
The competition winner for a new Spaceport in New Mexico was announced in September. The winning design by Foster + Partners and URS will be the first facility of its kind and a model for the future.
Supported by the work of pha consult, the design will incorporate sustainable design features, local materials and regional construction techniques to minimise the scheme’s impact on the environment.
Entered via a channel cut into the landscape, the building is proportioned to relate to the dimensions of the spacecraft and is also partially submerged to protect the internal environment from the extremes of the desert climate.
